The project "New Occupation Sources, 1999-2000"
made possible by TMB and Barcelona Activa, was the means to
give a job opportunity to some people belonging to socially
excluded groups and who, up to then, had not had the chance
of becoming part of the working population as Civic Agents
and Customer Service personnel by means of a theoretical and
practical training course carried out in the Barcelona underground
network.
In January 2001, TMB signed a frame contract for the social
and working inclusion of people under the risk of exclusion
with the NGO "Casal dels Infants del Raval".
This is a non ideological or political association, 50% financed
with public and private funds. Since its beginnings in 1983,
it has been devoted to the care of infants and youths in the
quarter known as El Raval, with the aim of breaking the exclusion
barriers and open their way into society. They try to reduce,
as far as possible, the cause of inequality to level the children
they take care of with the rest of the society in which they
will have to live. The flow of immigrants , few at the beginning
and mostly from Morocco, has spectacularly risen in the last
few years to place the migratory phenomenon on the first line.
Today, most of the children come from countries outside the
European Community.
Most of the youths taken care of at the "Casal dels
Infants del Raval" come from unstructured families of
a low economic level and with serious lacks of affection.
Their initiatives are aimed at the education of the children
after school, the labour insertion of the youths and the care
of children in the street, as well as carrying out leisure
activities for all of them.
The main supplier of security services for TMB, the private
security company Prosegur, also takes part in the project.
In the agreement, the will of TMB to encourage insertion avoiding
any type of discrimination is clearly defined, be it by origin,
ethnic or gender reasons.
As the fruit of this initiative, some people from the "Casal
d'Infants del Raval", have had their first labour experience
in the security workforce.
In June 2001, as a pilot experience, TMB began the enrolment
of a team of station assistants bearing diverse ethnic and
cultural profiles.
Prosegur, enrolled people from Morocco, Pakistan Senegal,
Peru .............to assist customers, help in case of need
and for dissuasion of fraud in the underground.
Parallel to this action, TMB changed the requirements for
enrolments so as to allow people from other cultures to accede
to the selection process.
This way, a selection for station managers for the first
time had candidates from diverse origins who, once passed
the selection process began giving service during the holidays
and changed their temporary contracts to indefinite ones in
September 2001.
In July 2001, and to give assistance in stations with a large
number of people from Gipsy ethnic origins, another pilot
experience was begun by enrolling three people from this ethnic
background for the tasks of Station Assitance and who help
at the stations where this ethnic group is more present.
The success of these initiatives in itself was the guarantee
of these actions and, facing the imminent enrolment of more
bus drivers, the possibility of enrolling people from various
ethnic origins for this posts has been considered.
Aware of the idiomatic and training difficulties that these
groups have to be able to pass the selection process, Barcelona
Activa has begun a subsidized specific training course for
obtaining driving licence B, driving licence D, Customer Service
Skills and basic Catalonian Language.
Those who pass this training program will be in possession
of the knowledge required to be able to participate with a
guarantee of success in the selection process for drivers,
among which the TMB one is included.
At present, an average of 4% of the people who collaborate
with TMB come from various groups.
