The public transport network in the Barcelona area has evolved at the same pace as urban growth.

  • 1872 First tram line: Rambla,Gràcia.
  • 1877 First steam tram line: Sant Andreu.
  • 1899 The first tram lines are electrified.
  • 1906 First trial buses.
  • 1911 The tram companies merge.
  • 1920 Ferrocarril Metropolità de Barcelona, S.A. (Transversal) is founded.
  • 1921 Gran Metropolitano de Barcelona, S.A.(Gran Metro) is founded.
  • 1922 First established bus lines.
  • 1924 The first metro line is opened: Lesseps - Catalunya.
  • 1925 The company Les Tramways de Barcelona, S.A. closes down and Tranvías de Barcelona, S.A. is founded.
  • 1928 The Montjuïc funicular railway starts operating.
  • 1941 First trolleybus line.
  • 1957 Public transport is municipalised.
  • 1959 FC Metropolità de Barcelona, S.A. and Tranvías de Barcelona, S.A. are set up as private municipal companies.
  • 1968 The trolleybus network is closed down.
  • 1969 Tranvías de Barcelona, S.A. changes its name to Transports de Barcelona, S.A.
  • 1971 The last tramlines are phased out, except for the Tramvia Blau.
  • 1979 The companies Ferrocarril Metropolità de Barcelona, S.A. and Transports de Barcelona, S.A. become jointly managed under the shared name of Transports Municipals de Barcelona.
  • 1986 The metropolitan transport expansion plan is launched under the aegis of Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona.
  • 1992 The first low-floored buses, designed for everyone, are introduced.
  • 1995 Line 2 is inaugurated, a new Metro line, completely adapted for the disabled.
  • 1997 A new stretch of Line 2 from Sagrada Família to La Pau is put into service, also completely adapted for the disabled.
  • 1998 Inauguration of the Neighbourhood Bus lines.
  • 2001 Tariff integration
