The city's nerve centre

The centrally located Plaça de Catalunya links the old town
with the new extension laid out in the 19th century following the
demolition of the medieval city walls. It marks the beginning of
the famous Rambla, which slopes gently down to the sea. The
boulevard showcases a unique and colourful universe: the Boqueria
Market, the flower stalls, the opera house, the Teatre del Liceu,
and endless unexpected attractions such as a museum devoted to
erotica. Near the Plaça Catalunya, you will find the Palau
de la Música , a breathtaking jewel of Catalan art nouveau
or Modernisme which is another must-see. Don't forget that the
Tourist Information Office and the BCN Original gift shop are
located under the plaza. An excellent sightseeing option is the
Ciclobus, a bicyclehire service which allows you to take a
leisurely ride from here to other places in the city. You can hire
the bicycles from the Plaça Catalunya and return them at any
of the other Ciclobus hire points.
